We are happy to announce that we have received a grant of DKK 1.585.000 from Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond to conduct a PhD-project with focus on the impact of psychiatric disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults with inflammatory bowel disease (#IBD). With that project, we hope to shed a light on the challenges that patients with IBD experience in a hospital setting, as well as investigate the potential overlap of biological markers between IBD and psychiatric disorders.

The PhD-project will be carried out by Sabine Jansson supervised by/in collaboration with Vibeke Wewer, Mikkel Malham, Charlotte Ulrikka Rask, Johan Burisch, Flemming Bendtsen, Michael Benros and Kaija-Leena Kolho.

The disease burden of IBD can be both physically and mentally challenging and patients with IBD have an increased risk of psychiatric disorders compared to the background population.
While part of the risk might be explained directly by the burden of IBD, overlapping genetic and biological factors between the disease groups have also been identified, suggesting a complex bidirectional relationship.
